Chado Urasenke Tankokai SF Association Mugenki Tea Ceremony

On Sunday, August 13, 2023, the Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Mugenki memorial tea ceremony at Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California) in San Francisco’s Japantown. This event honored the memory of Tantansai also known as Mugensai, the 14th grandmaster of Urasenke tea school.
This event was hosted by Soyo Pusic and her students. Sosei Sakaue served as the teishu (host) and Soei Bartlett, Director of Urasenke Foundation San Francisco, was the first guest during the first seating. Michiyo Hoshino served as the teishu at the second seating to which Mr. Yasushi Noguchi, Consul General at Consulate General of Japan in SF, and Sojin Hagiwara, the Chief of Administration of the Association, attended as the first and third guests, respectively. Eka Meyer served as the teishu and Sokyu Uramoto was the first guest during the third seating. Throughout all seatings, Soyo Pusic served as the hanto (assistant).
During the tea ceremony, the guests appreciated the tea, sweets, and the tea room environment prepared for the day which reminded them of Tantansai and deepened their thoughts
