Chado Urasenke Tankokai SF Association Rikyuki Tea Ceremony
The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Rikyuki Tea Ceremony on March 9, 2025, at the Kansoan Tea Room of Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California). The tea ceremony was hosted by current board members of the Association.
Consul ARIMURA Yuki of the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco; Soei Bartlett, Director of the Urasenke Foundation San Francisco; and nearly 60 attendees commemorated the legacy of SEN Rikyu (1522-1591), founder of the Japanese way of tea.
Flower offerings were made by Consul ARIMURA, Sokyo Tiscornia and TAKECHI Soko.
Consul ARIMURA was the first guest and KIMORI Sono served as teishu (host) during the first seating.
During the second seating, HAYASHI Soyu was the first guest and Sokei Wooster served as teishu.
HAGIWARA Sojin, the Chief of Administration of the Association, served as hanto (assistant) of the first two seatings.
During the third seating, YAMADA Sochi was the first guest and HOSHINO Michiyo served as teishu during the third seating. Soyo Pusic served as hanto.
In these gatherings to appreciate the life of SEN Rikyu, every guest was served handmade sweets that evoked the arrival of spring — “Hana Ikada” (“Flower Raft”) and “Samazama Sakura” (“Assorted Cherry Blossoms”) — followed by a bowl of tea.
