Chado Urasenke Tankokai SF Association Sotanki Tea Ceremony
The Chado Urasenke Tankokai San Francisco Association held its annual Sotanki Memorial Tea Ceremony on December 1st, 2024, at Kanso-san Tea Room of the Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern California) located in San Francisco’s Japantown. This tea ceremony gathering honored the third generation Grand Master of Urasenke School of Tea, SEN Sotan (1578-1658). In the generation of his children, the three lines of the family, Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushanokojisenke, were established.
TAKECHI Soko and Sokyo Tiscornia Shachu hosted the tea attended by 53 members and guests. Vice President Allen Okamoto welcomed the guests, and Sokyo Tiscornia introduced the hosts. Flowers were offered by OSUMI Misao, the wife of the Consul General of Japan in San Francisco; Soei Bartlett, Director of the Urasenke Foundation SF Branch; and URAMOTO Sokyu.
Mrs. OSUMI Misao, the wife of the Consul General of Japan in San Francisco, was the first guest. Sofu Pantsios served as the teishu (host) and Sokyo Tiscornia as the hanto (assistant) during the first seating, which began at 10:30 am. HAGIWARA Sojin was the first guest for the second seating with MURAKAMI Hazuki as the host and TAKECHI Soko as the assistant. Sokei Wright was the first guest of the third seating, with Kyoko Porcino serving as the host and Sofu Pantsios as the assistant.
The tea ceremony was held on a sunny Sunday which helped the guests enjoy the wonderful day filled with memories of Sotan and his many contributions to Urasenke School of Tea.
